Storage Area On Linux Server

Hi,

I got a backup server with centOS 6 only (no web panel just root) on linux today. What is the standard to saving backup files to the server with regards to directory location. I suppose i can create a directory anywhere but is there a standard place they should be saved? I will be porting my backups to the server from cpanel via the backup server IP.

I did consider creating a home dir since i dont have one but then if i ever decide to add web it will overwrite my backup files.
