How long can PHP sleep

Hi guys,
I have a script that I wan to to trigger after a user has registered, after a random amount of time between 1-5 minutes I want to send them a notification, and then repeat this 2 more times.

Is it okay to use sleep() for this large amount of time? I know executing via cron is better but it makes it far more difficult to code.
